September 1-3, 2021
Online

Objective

The UEA PhD Student Workshop is an online workshop designed for advanced PhD students with an interest in urban economics including housing, real estate, transportation, local public goods provision, the spatial distribution of activities, economic geography, and urban and regional policy. The objective of the workshop is to allow students to present their own research and discuss their work with faculty working at the forefront of research in this area. The workshop will run for three days with three to four students presenting their papers on each day. In addition to these student presentations, there will be time for small group discussions of research ideas on all three days.

Participants

We invite applications from advanced PhD students with interests that are related to urban economics who already have a completed paper. Places in the workshop will be limited to enable an informal and interactive workshop. Participants are expected to attend all three days in full. If you have attended the UEA PhD student workshops in previous years you are welcome to apply again. If you have already presented your paper at an earlier workshop, you would need to submit a new paper to have a chance to get another presentation slot. However, you are welcome to submit the same paper if you just want to attend and participate in the discussions.

Organisation

The workshop will run on Zoom. The workshop will be held from approximately 11:00 to 15:30 (US Eastern Time) on each of the three days. Exact timings to be confirmed closer to the workshop.

Lectures

The workshop will not feature presentations from faculty and is entirely devoted to student presentations and discussions of research ideas. For a set of summer school style lectures we would like to draw your attention to the recordings of the 2020 Lectures on Urban Economics that are available on our YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/UrbanEconomics.

Application

To apply for the workshop you need to submit your paper, CV and a short letter explaining why you are keen to participate. Please combine these three documents into one pdf file for submission that contains first the letter, then the CV and finally the paper. Note that we no longer require a statement from your supervisor. The workshop is free of charge.

We will inform you at the end of July whether you have been accepted. If you are accepted for the workshop you will either present your paper in one of the presentation slots or will be allocated to a small group discussion of your research ideas.
